Breeding Oligancistrus zuanoni L020
Just recently came back from a trip to Germany, and got a nice adult male (12-13cm) from my friend Sandor. I had a single adult female from before (10-11cm).
I put them into a 74 liter tank alone with a lot of rocks for hiding places and 3 caves, 2 with opening in the end and one with side opening. Filter with 800l/h, quite slow for catfish tank. Just around one week after the male had picked his cave, the one with side opening. The day after the female was inside and next day eggs. Today i came home from the local aquarium club meeting and found around 10 small freshly hatched babies outside the cave Two was damaged and died. One was still in the egg, and the 7-8left was still in good shape. I put them into a breeding box with sand and airstone for circulation. The male is still fanning on a big clutch inside the cave so i don't know how many its in there.(luckily) The water was around 28-29degree, pH around 6,5-6,7 and conductivity is around 180. |
One more photo of the tank, with the male in the cave and the breeding box in the tank.
Gonna try to upload one photo every day to see the development of the fry |
Congrats Ole!
Keep as on date with news! Bests, Christian |
Hi Ole,
congratulations! Good to see that the forced extension of your stay in Gemany turned out to be worthwile after all! I´d be happy if you considered me for some of the young ones! :klt: Cheers, Sandor |
Hi Sandor! Yes if they grow up, i bring you a group next german trip!
I have had no loss until now exept the once that was injured by the "throwout". The rest is still good in the breeding box and the male is still taking care of the rest. I have a idea that it was the female that made the male throw them out when she was trying to get into the cave again. She looks ready to breed again already. Very fat!! |
Here is update photos from the breeding box.
First photo is taken yesterday and the last one is from today. |
Fresh photo from today. They are growing and getting some color:rty:

Hi Ole,

The babies have start eating. I have empty the cave. It is 16 total now in the box, and 3-4 loose in the tank with the parrents. All are doing fine.

Hey Ole,
