Mir scheint hier das eine oder andere durcheinanderzugehen. Von Überfischung war jedenfalls zu Anfang wohl nicht die Rede.

Toxic waste pollutes indigenous territory in the Xingu region - 09/28/2003

Batteries are the greatest threat
The 4,000 Indians who live in the Xingu Indigenous Park in Mato Grosso are fighting against a powerful enemy - toxic waste which is corroding their land and contaminating their rivers. They are appealing to white society to help them remove the tonnes of batteries and oil cans which have been dumped in the area.
Contracted by the Federal University of Sao Paulo and the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), two technicians from the Instituto GEA will spend a week in the Xingu Park to analyse the situation and identify solutions. They will discuss the conclusions of their research with indigenous leaders next week.
"We are facing a great challenge, but we are on the right track because the Indians are aware of the risks and are keen to find a solution", said environmentalist Ana Maria Domingues Luz. Other non-biodegradable material is also polluting the area, including tyres and satellite dishes. Plastics, paper and hospital waste is generally burnt, which is not always the most appropriate method of dealing with it.
The Indians are also facing problems caused by the pollution of their rivers

A new mine located on the Xingu river, two and a half hours by plane from Altamira, which was discovered two months ago, is attracting hundreds of miners from all over Amazonia. The first miners to arrive have confirmed that the gold found there is of excellent quality.
The director of IBAMA, the Brazilian environment agency, in Altamira, Carlos Bicelli, has already filed a report about the new mine with his superiors in Brasilia. He is concerned about the use of mercury to separate the gold. Mercury contamination has already occured at four other mines in the area.
