Six new Ancistrus from Nothwestern Guiana Shield

Review of Ancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the northwestern Guiana Shield, Orinoco Andes, and adjacent basins with description of six new species

Abstract
The Orinoco Andes and northwestern Guiana Shield (Essequibo, Orinoco, Branco, and upper Negro) were found to contain 11 species of Ancistrus, six of which are new. We additionally examine A. brevifilis from the R�*o Tuy of Venezuela and A. trinitatis from the island of Trinidad. The species in the region can be broken up into dorsoventrally flattened species (A. leoni new species, A. lithurgicus, and A. macropthalmus), white to yellow-dotted species (A. kellerae new species, A. nudiceps, and A. patronus new species), wide-jawed species (A. amaris new species and A. yutajae new species), and white-spotted species (A. brevifilis, A. leucostictus, A. trinitatis, A. saudades new species, and A. triradiatus). Distributions of Ancistrus support the Proto-Berbice hypothesis as A. saudades is found in the upper reaches of the Ventuari, Caura, and Caroni rivers, which were thought to have once flowed into the Proto-Berbice. In addition, although A. nudiceps does not appear to have split once the Takutu River was captured by the Branco, the progenitor of A. leucostictus and A. saudades did speciate with the populations on either side of the Rupununi Portal differing by 7% sequence divergence of the mitochondrial Cytochrome b gene. Besides the descriptions of the new species, we redescribe the others occurring in the area, and adjacent watersheds. We provide a key for their identification, and a preliminary hypothesis of relationships based on DNA sequences of the few species for which tissue samples are available.

Hi,

zunächst hatte ich mich über eine umfangreiche Arbeit gefreut, die hoffentlich Klarheit über die Ancistrus vom (westlichen) Guyana-Schild schafft. Meine anfängliche Freude ist nun doch eher einer Ernüchterung gewichen.

Insbesondere Ancistrus leucostictus hat mich interessiert, da meine Ancistrus sp. "Nickerie River" "offziell" als Ancistrus gr. leucostictus bezeichnet mit dieser Art in Beziehung gesetzt werden, was ich für unsinnig hielt und weiter halte.

Günther schreibt in der zugegenermaßen sehr kurzen Erstbeschreibung von Ancistrus leucostictus zur Färbung:

In der Arbeit steht nun:

Color in alcohol. Base color light brown with medium light spots concentrated on head and snout,... All fins with alternating dark and light spots...Dark interspaces on the head, anterior body, and abdomen usually less than half the width of the spots...
Life colors. Base color brown and gray with medium white irregularly-shaped spots concentrated on the head and snout. Body posterior to dorsal-fin origin equally spotted.

Allgemein schreiben sie in der Arbeit noch, dass sich die verschiednen Arten morphologisch kaum voneinander trennen lassen und verweisen auf eine Unsicherheit bzgl. des Holotyps von Ancistrus leucostictus:

Die Färbung des Ancistrus, den sie als Ancistrus leucostictus abbilden, passt so überhaupt nicht zur Erstbeschreibung, offenbar gibt es keinen allgemein anerkannten Holotyp, aber dennoch wird diese Art neu beschrieben mit einer völlig anderen Färbung, ohne diesen mehr als offensichtlichen Widerspruch auch nur zu thematisieren ?!?!
Gibt es keine Reviewer, die so eine Arbeit vorher lesen ?

P.S. Es gibt durchaus unter den 11 Arten aus der Region, die in der Arbeit (wieder/neu) beschrieben werden auch welche, auf die die Färbung aus der Erstbeschreibung von Günther passen würde.
